Located in the heart of Closter, the Closter Nature Center (CNC) preserves 136 acres of woods, streams, wetlands, and ponds; featuring over 3 miles of scenic trails. We provide a sanctuary where people of all ages are welcome to connect with and explore the natural world.
Since 1962, our Board has championed the belief that understanding and enjoying nature is not just enriching, it’s essential.

OUR HISTORY
The journey began in 1961, when the Borough of Closter, worried that rapid development might compromise the town’s future quality of life, formed a committee to explore creating a nature center. A year later, in 1962, CNC was officially incorporated as a non-profit, leasing 80 acres from the Borough and laying the foundation for what would become a community treasure.
By 1967, the cabin was erected to host classes and gatherings, bringing people closer to the wonders of the outdoors.
As the years passed, the Nature Center grew. In 1985, the lease was expanded to include 55 more acres and extended for 50 years. In 1996, local resident Elsie Downey generously donated an additional acre, solidifying the 136-acre haven we cherish today.
From the start, environmental education has been a core part of our mission
In 1972, our founding trustees, scientists, and nature enthusiasts launched the first Summer Program for children. This spark of curiosity grew in 1983 with the addition of an After-School Program during the school months.
By 2001, with the hiring of a staff Naturalist, CNC’s programs had expanded to reach children and families in neighboring communities, spreading a love for nature far and wide.
In recent years, CNC has worked not only to preserve its land, but to ensure the long-term vitality of both the forest and the organization.
In 2017, we launched our Reforestation Initiative, guided by a Forest Stewardship Plan developed in collaboration with the NJ Audubon Society.
We welcomed our first Executive Director in 2023, bringing dedicated leadership to guide CNC into the future.
2024 saw the introduction of the first annual Hike-a-Thon fundraiser, an event that successfully engages the community in the financial support of CNC while encouraging participants to explore our natural resources and become active in the outdoors.
